Сильвио отказывается. Когда статья выходит в печать, его обвиняют в клевете, а потом – в участии в уличных беспорядках.Попав на 2 года в тюрьму, Сильвио теряет место в газете. Елена (у нее теперь от Сильвио ребенок) и мать Сильвио вынуждают его, 33-летнего мужчину, пойти учиться на архитектора и платят за учебу. Он пишет роман «Трудная жизнь». Он проваливается на экзамене, напивается и не хочет возвращаться к Елене. Сильвио ссорится с Еленой и заявляет, что между ними никогда не было ничего общего, кроме чувств. Они расстаются. Оставшись один, Сильвио безуспешно пытается издать роман, а затем – экранизировать его. Он связывается с Мангано, Гассманом, Блазетти. Сцены ужина у монархистов, экзамена Сорди и 2 запоев стали хрестоматийными. Альберто Сорди и Родольфо Сонего, фирменного сценариста Ризи, следует считать полноправными авторами фильма наравне с режиссером. 40 лет Сорди воплощал надежды и разочарования итальянцев и за это время выстроил настоящую биографию целого народа и общества. В этом отношении ни один европейский актер не может сравниться с ним.N.В. Большинство великих актеров послевоенного итальянского кинематографа были больше чем актеры.
